The Burnout Red Flags You’re Ignoring
Mar 03, 2025
Burnout Doesn't Start with Exhaustion
Most entrepreneurs don’t realize they’re burning out until they hit a wall. Then they’re too exhausted to function, resentful of their business, or questioning whether it’s all worth it. But burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps in through subtle warning signs that are easy to miss.
If you’re feeling out of sorts in your business but can’t quite put your finger on why, here are five burnout red flags you should pay attention to.
1. You’re Working More but Accomplishing Less
At first, pushing harder seems like the solution. You add more hours, say yes to more clients, and convince yourself you just need to get through this busy season, or launch, or fill in the blank. But despite the extra effort, you’re spinning your wheels and feeling drained while not making progress.
Flip the script: Instead of working harder, do an energy audit—track which tasks fuel you and which drain you. If your days are full of draining tasks, it’s time to eliminate, automate, or delegate.
2. You’re Losing Your Creativity & Problem-Solving Ability
Remember when you used to wake up buzzing with ideas? You couldn’t wait to get everything captured so you wouldn’t forget it. Now, everything feels forced. You struggle to make decisions, feel uninspired, or find yourself dreading creative tasks that used to light you up.
This happens because burnout depletes your cognitive resources, making innovation nearly impossible.
Weave this in: Give your brain strategic rest—even short, intentional breaks (like a 10-minute walk or a coffee chat with a friend) can boost creative thinking.
3. Resentment Toward Clients (or Your Own Business) is Creeping In
You started your business because you love what you do, but now... everything annoys you. A client request that used to be no big deal suddenly makes you want to throw your laptop out the window. But don’t do it! You feel trapped in the very thing you built.
Flip the script: This is a boundary issue in disguise. Where are you overcommitting? Where are you saying “yes” when you should be saying “no”? Identify one small way to set a boundary today—whether it’s limiting client calls or enforcing your office hours. (If you don’t have office hours, set them TODAY!
4. You’re Always “On” (Even When You’re Supposed to Be Off)
Your laptop is always open. You answer emails during dinner. You scroll through work messages when you’re supposed to be relaxing. Even when you’re not working, your brain feels like it is.
This creates chronic stress, which over time leads to exhaustion, anxiety, and even physical health issues. You don’t wan to be in that space because it takes a lot of energy to find your way out of it.
Weave this in: Try a 'No Work Zone' Rule—start by setting one time block (like dinner or your morning routine) where work is completely off-limits. Small boundaries build up to bigger ones over time.
5. You’re Feeling Disconnected from Why You Started
You used to feel passionate about your business, but now it feels like a to-do list. You question if it’s even worth it. This isn’t because you’ve lost your drive, it’s because burnout is clouding your clarity.
Flip the script: Reconnect with your big picture vision—why did you start this in the first place? What impact did you want to create? Journaling or talking to a mentor/coach can help reignite your purpose.
Final Suggestion: Catch Burnout Before It Catches You
